The Lotus Sapphire – Padparadscha

by Gems By Dynamic 17 Mar 2026 0 Comments

Have you ever wondered what would happen if a flower turned into a gemstone? Imagine the delicate colors of a lotus at sunrise — soft pink melting gently into warm orange, glowing in the first light of day. Now imagine that exact moment captured forever inside a sapphire. That is the magic of Padparadscha, one of the most enchanting and rare sapphires in the world.

Our featured Sapphire is a beautiful 2.06 carat oval Padparadscha sapphire measuring 8.60 × 6.80 × 3.90 mm. This certified gemstone shows the signature pink-orange lotus color and comes with a Japan Gemological certificate confirming its identity. Even more special, this sapphire is no-heat, meaning its natural beauty and color remain exactly as nature created it.

What is a Padparadscha Sapphire?

Padparadscha is one of the rarest varieties of sapphire, famous for its unique blend of pink and orange color. The name “Padparadscha” comes from the Sinhalese word for “lotus blossom,” referring to the beautiful pink-orange shade of a lotus flower at sunrise. This extraordinary color cannot be easily described as purely pink or orange — it exists in a delicate balance between the two, creating a warm, glowing tone that feels soft yet vibrant.

Padparadscha sapphires can be found in Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and Tanzania. True Padparadscha stones with the perfect lotus color remain extremely rare.

Why is Padparadscha Sapphire So Valuable?

The value of Padparadscha sapphire comes mainly from its color rarity. Nature must produce the exact harmony of pink and orange without leaning too strongly toward either color. If the stone becomes too pink or too orange, it is no longer considered Padparadscha. Because this perfect balance happens only under very specific natural conditions, genuine Padparadscha sapphires are incredibly scarce.

This rarity has also made Padparadscha sapphires admired even in royal jewelry. One of the most famous modern examples is the engagement ring of Princess Eugenie of the British royal family. Her ring features a rare Padparadscha sapphire surrounded by diamonds, chosen for its unique pink-orange color. The center stone is estimated to be around 3–4 carats, and the ring itself has been valued at around $100,000.

This makes it one of the few royal engagement rings in history to feature a Padparadscha sapphire, which is particularly special because most royal jewelry traditionally showcases classic blue sapphires.

Collector’s Piece, Jewelry Creation, or Investment?

Padparadscha sapphires are loved by collectors and jewelry designers for their extraordinary rarity and natural beauty. Each stone carries its own unique lotus-like blend of pink and orange, making every gem truly one of a kind.

Because of their limited supply and increasing demand, fine Padparadscha sapphires are also considered attractive investment pieces. Exceptional stones, especially those with natural color and no heat treatment, are highly sought after by collectors.

For designers and jewelry lovers, their warm pink-orange glow pairs beautifully with rose gold, yellow gold, or platinum, making them perfect for elegant rings, pendants, or timeless heirloom jewelry.
