What Makes Brazilian Alexandrite Special?

Brazilian Alexandrites are among the most coveted varieties of this gemstone due to their vivid color change and high-quality crystal structure. Discovered in the early 1980s in the Hematita region of Minas Gerais, Brazilian Alexandrites have captivated gem enthusiasts worldwide with their remarkable ability to shift colors under different lighting conditions.

The Phenomenon of Color Change
The most extraordinary characteristic of Alexandrite is its phenomenal color change. This gemstone displays a distinct shift from green-blue in daylight to purplish-red under incandescent light. This optical phenomenon, known as the "Alexandrite Effect," is due to the complex way in which the gemstone's crystal structure absorbs and reflects light.

This special color change in alexandrite occurs due to trace elements, primarily chromium, within the crystal structure. When exposed to daylight, rich in blue and green wavelengths, the chromium ions absorb red light and reflect green, giving the alexandrite its green-blue appearance. Under incandescent light, which has more red wavelengths, the gemstone absorbs blue and green light, reflecting red and creating a purplish hue. This unique interaction between light and the gemstone's structure creates the enchanting and dramatic color change that makes alexandrite so prized among gem collectors and jewelry aficionados.

The Origins of Alexandrite
Alexandrite was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 1830s and was named in honor of the future Tsar Alexander II. The initial discovery of this gem in Russia set a high standard for its quality and color change, establishing its reputation as a rare and valuable gemstone. Today, Alexandrite can be found in other locations such as Brazil, Sri Lanka, East Africa, and India, but high-quality specimens remain exceedingly rare.

Geological Rarity
One of the primary reasons for Alexandrite's rarity is the specific geological conditions required for its formation. Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl, and its color-changing ability is due to the presence of chromium, which is also responsible for the green color of emeralds. The formation of Alexandrite requires an unusual combination of elements: beryllium, aluminum, and chromium, which rarely occur together in significant quantities. This unique combination, along with the specific geological conditions necessary for the gemstone to form, makes Alexandrite a rare occurrence in nature.

Mining Conditions
While Alexandrite deposits have been found in various parts of the world, high-quality Alexandrite remains scarce. The original Russian deposits produced some of the finest Alexandrite ever seen, but these mines have been largely depleted. Brazilian Alexandrite, like the one featured in our 1.06-carat Alexandrite ring, is highly valued for its vibrant color change and good clarity. However, even in Brazil, the gemstone is found in limited quantities, contributing to its rarity and high value.

Our 1.06-carat Brazilian Alexandrite ring is handcrafted using PT 900. It is a cocktail ring, encompassing the Alexandrite at the centre with round and two pear shaped natural white diamonds weighing 1.66 carats. The design of ring gives a vintage feel to it, and is apt for an engagement ring.
