Spinels were mysterious gemstones once upon a time and were mistaken to be rubies, due to their striking red hue which is identical to that of a ruby! Spinels differ from rubies as the former are singly refractive, meaning they display one color. Rubies, on the other hand, display different shades of red as they reflect light differently in all directions. Have you noticed this difference before?
